America Here We Come!
I read this on the Ipswich Unemployed action this morning about how the government is considering plans to distribute food vouchers to people on the dole. I find this shocking in this day and age. Is this not what they do in America?.
If the intention is to provide emergency aid for those whose claims are being processed or re-assessed, it sounds fair enough in isolation, but I suspect that IDS has plans and that this is only the fist step. Indeed, the wording of the Guardian article hints as much.
It may indeed be a pilot scheme for a plan to gradually replace cash JSA with handouts, but it may also be part of the government's prepartion to fight the threatened strikes over public sector spending cuts. Those strikes inevitably mean that claims will take longer to work their way through the system than they do now.
